WESTERN Knights midfielder David Micevski is determined to use a glittering 2009 season, which culminated in his Gold Medal win as the Best & Fairest player in the WA State Premier Division, as the catalyst to restart a professional football career.
Micevski won the richest grassroots football prize in Australia by one vote from Mandurah City’s Ryan Townsend, with the former Perth Glory player stealing the lead in the final round of voting.
“I’m absolutely over the moon, I didn’t know I was going to win it until the last vote” Micevski said, clutching his 9-carat gold medal and keys to a new Ford Fiesta.
“I’m still pretty much speechless at the moment; I’m delighted to win such a great prize and very thankful to McInerney Ford and Football West for such a great prize.”
“I thought I’d be up there with a chance (of winning it) but it was a great fight with Ryan (Townsend) all the way and it came down to the wire” he said.
It looks increasingly unlikely that the Knights will be able to hold onto their star midfielder, with Micevski actively seeking opportunities in the A-League or Asia in a bid to resume his pro-career which was temporarily ended at the Glory two years ago.
“My first choice would be to stay in Perth with the Glory but if I can’t get a chance there then I may look over east and see if I can get a chance to get back in the A-League.”
