THE Secret Harbour Junior Football Club will field a new under 17s team in the South Fremantle league this year.
This will be one of only two under 17 teams from the Peel district,
Club president Peter McClay said it was disappointing there was not an under 17s competition locally.
He said the club believed a 17s competition should be the premier grade for youth football as it was where most of the AFL draftees were spotted and show they have what it takes to play at the highest level.
Numbers are good from last season but there are still some places available as some players are unable to play this year due to work or study commitments.
There is a good attitude around the club at the moment and part of this is the result of a memorable trip to Melbourne last August.
The trip is to become a regular highlight for all Secret Harbour 16s teams.
The guys are looking forward to fundraising for a special end of season trip in 2011 when they will be the inaugural colts team and move into senior competition.
Pre-season is going to be full on with support from partner club the Fremantle Dockers and special coaching sessions planned with Dockers coaches and players.
Fremantle has also supplied training gear for the team.
There will also be some camp style training sessions as well.
The pre-season will culminate in a curtain raiser prior to a Fremantle Dockers game at Subiaco Oval against fellow Dockers’ partner club Ellenbrook.
Any players interested in playing in this 17’s team should contact assistant coach Steve Pascoe on 0419 989 466.
