Pinjarra consolidate top spot

10 Feb, 2010 03:31 PM
PINJARRA firmly cemented their position at the top of the Peel Cricket Association ladder after a solid win over White Knights Baldivis on home soil last weekend.

White Knights won the toss and elected to bat first.

The Knights started badly losing four quick wickets for 20 runs with Mark Hennessy doing the damage picking up 3/15.

A steady partnership formed between Leigh McIntosh (33) and Jamie Buchanan (37) to take the score to 85 until Baldivis collapsed losing 6/39 runs to be all out for 124 with Jamie Lee (3/21) and Ryan Pack (2/18) the other successful bowlers.

Pinjarra started slowly with the first wicket at 16 which brought Lee (39) and Peter Miller (26) together to steady the innings.

Baldivis must have taken some pride in dismissing Lee without a milestone as he has scored more than 250 runs in his last two innings.

Pinjarra continued to score, but lost two wickets before passing the Knights score in the 41st over.

Pack (98 off 91 balls) and Ford (47 not out) dominated in the latter overs with a partnership of 135 runs to finish Pinjarra's innings at 3/229.

Mandurah took on Old Irwinian’s at Stan Twight Reserve in Rockingham with Mandurah winning the toss and electing to bat.

In some overcast conditions it was not long before the visitors were in trouble at 3/30 and with prolific run machine Ben Drummond back in the pavilion Mandurah needed a lift and it came in the form of 16-year-old debutant Stu Hazelwood who clipped a polished 45 including three huge sixes.

Justin Solly (21) and Pete Westbrook (20) also made valuable contributions in the Mandurah total of 190.

Old Irwinian’s started the run chase in a hurry before being pegged back by some good bowling from consistent Mandurah bowler Paul Gaby who picked up 2/2 aided by the lively Micky Saggers with 1/38.

The introduction of Paul Okey to the bowling crease turned the game in Mandurah’s favour as he collected 4/19 from 9.1 overs.

Brett Ronan deceived the batsman taking 2/8 to help clean up the Old Irwinian’s innings for 109.

Warnbro hosted Halls Head at home with the game ending in a tight contest which saw Halls Head prevail with 6/179 to Warnbro’s 152.

Electing to bowl first on a lively wicket Halls Head struck early to have Warnbro at 1/10 until an 80-run partnership between Mitch Smith and Terry Rowe put the pressure back on Halls Head.

Halls Head struck again just before the drinks break with Peter Wyllie removing the dangerous Smith for 60.

Rowe fell a couple of overs later to Dale Burns for 39 with Warnbro travelling reasonably at 3/110.

After the dismissal of Rowe the batting collapsed and the home side was all out for 152, Halls Head bowlers Dave Lovell (4/29), Wyllie (3/26) and Burns (2/26) all contributed well.

Chasing 152 for victory Halls Head thought they were in for an easy afternoon but Warnbro took two quick wickets to have them 2/12 thanks to some great bowling from Mitch Smith (1/31) and Jani Metsola (1/23).

Chris Phelps and Liam Blampied then had the job of steadying the innings and the pair put on 114 before both batsmen were dismissed by Chris Motu with Blampied first to go for 80 and Phelps soon after for 33.

Halls Head were still in control at 4/128 but Warnbro were not giving up that easy and soon had them at 5/145 with five overs remaining but in the end the visitors managed to get the total with three overs to go.

Halls Head then hit out on the last couple of overs to finish on 6/179 with Mitch Morley the last man out for 34.

Best of the Warnbro bowlers was Motu with 2/26 from 10 overs including two maidens.

South Mandurah met Hillman at Peelwood and batted first on a dark wicket.

The action started early with Sean Nye being bowled out with the first ball before Brad Wiseman (27) and Dylan Smith (45) added 69 for the next wicket.

In all too familiar fashion South Mandurah collapsed following the good start to have the home side at 7/112 with Troy Lovegrove taking the first four wickets to finish with 4/55 and Lachlan McDonald snaring 3/15 with some very well directed spinners.

The game changed dramatically when renowned pinch hitter Judd Prentice joined Jessie Buck at the crease.

With Buck hobbling on an injured knee that he took into the game and Judd not fond of running the pair set about despatching the ball to all points of the ground in a whirlwind partnership of 96.

Buck ended not out with 67 and Prentice (55) with Dale Tyrrell capturing the last wickets to see South Mandurah finish with a competitive 233.

Hillman started impressively with Ryan Dickson and the elevated Lovegrove compiling 75 in quick time to have the home team stunned.

A double bowling change had veteran seamers Peter Birtles and Ritchie Smith enter the attack with Birtles soon dismissing Lovegrove after the batsmen hit consecutive boundaries.

Birtles then pulled off an amazing runout to have Lachlan McDonald dismissed without facing a ball as well as picking up another scalp along the way.

Smith then dismantled the middle order taking four wickets in seven balls to have Hillman 7/84 losing 7/9 after a great start.

Birtles and Smith were tied on four wickets each and battled to pick up the last Hillman scalp with Birtles succeeding after Smith had Dickson dropped behind the stumps and a sitter missed at cover.

Hillman capitulated to be all out for 131 with Ryan Dickson carrying his bat for a solid 85 not out unaided by a total of six ducks on the scorecard.

Birtles finished with 5/37 and Smith 4/34.

In the other game at Stan Twight Shoalwater was too good for Waroona defeating them 6/248 to 183.
