Hat-trick for Smith in windy conditions

28 Oct, 2009 05:06 PM
SOUTH Mandurah teenager Dylan Smith collected an all-bowled hat-trick to help his side to a narrow victory against Waroona in round three of the Peel Cricket Competition.

Waroona batted first and after posting an opening stand of 59 were looking to capitalise on a dead wicket before Prentice finally broke through.

Waroona went to drinks only one wicket down with 90 on the board with Derosa in fine form.

Ritchie Smith struck first ball after drinks, bowling Reed and then following up a couple of overs later to bowl Rendall to finish with 2/32.

After Derosa’s dismissal for 86, Waroona captain Shane Lomman batted solidly for 32 before becoming the first of Dylan Smith’s victims on the way to his hat trick. Luke Smith also chipped in with 2/28.

South Mandurah started aggressively with Brad Holmes and Luke Smith scoring at eight runs an over before Holmes was dismissed with the score at 79.

Waroona then turned the tables snaring 5/14, Clancy bowling Mick Holmes and Dylan Smith in one over for ducks to have the visitors in deep trouble at 6/93.

Hysen also bowled well to finish with 3/17.

A lower order recovery between Bathgate and Hoffman put on 40 before Nye and Prentice took the game away from Waroona with some controlled hitting to get over the line by five runs.

Halls Head and Mandurah played for the annual Max Crook Cup with Mandurah batting first on a very slow and low wicket at Peelwood.

After a steady start they had good contributions from Ben Drummond (35) and Justin Solly (43) and when Drummond departed with the score at 4 for 92 in the 34th over Halls Head were on top.

Mandurah’s middle order and tail did well to make a formidable total of 160, particularly given that the wicket was hard to score on and the outfield was slow.

All Halls Head bowlers did a sound job, Matt Gordon again being the pick of the group with 4/ 41 from his 10 overs.

Brendon King and Matt Guyton both chipped in with two wickets each.

Halls Head started well in their chase with young openers Mitch Green and Brennan Gillam putting on 40 in 10 overs before Gillam was brilliantly run out from the boundary line by Peter Westbrook with a direct hit.

This was the catalyst for Mandurah to put Halls Head under pressure with excellent bowling from Paul Okey (3/35) and John Ferguson (2/17).

Mitch Green made a good 38 and Peter Wyllie was stranded on 30 not out when the team collapsed to be all out for 128.

Drummond cleaned up the tail and finished with the figures of 3/4 off 4.1 overs.

Warnbro and Old Irwinians fought out a close tussle at the Warnbro recreation centre with the home side winning by four runs, 152 to 9/149.

After winning the toss and sending the home side in on a very lively wicket, and a strong breeze around, conditions were good for bowling.

The decision soon paid dividends as the visitors struck early blows to have the home side reeling at 5/62 thanks to some good bowling from Rob McLean 2/27 and D Ellis 4/20.

Scott Bradford (28) and Keren Ugle Jr (23) kept the runs ticking over but Warnbro kept losing wickets at the wrong times.

Warnbro needed something and Liam Ugle provided it and hit a very well composed 59 to get the home side to a very defendable total of 152.

The pick of the other bowlers for Old Irwinians was Dave Morgan with 3/11.

Chasing 153 to win, Old Irwinians got off to a steady start before trouble struck through Keren Ugle Sr 3/20 and Mitch Smith 1/32 to have Old Irwinians in trouble at 4/53, some steadying partnerships between Steve Ralph (27) and Ian Bowes (25) kept the visitors alive.

Warnbro struck back through Keren Ugle Jr 2/19 and Liam Ugle 2/28 and all seemed lost for the visitors at 8/99 but they didn’t go away with D Morgan (25 not out) and D Ellis (15 not out) taking the fight back to Warnbro.

With 10 runs required off the last over, Old Irwinians could only manage six and went down by four runs in a spirited chase.

Baldivis Knights batted first on a good batting deck at Settlers and soon found themselves in trouble at 2/15.

Ryan Kenny and Leigh Sibley recovered the early damage only to be dismissed in quick succession to have the knights 4/55.

Leigh McIntosh and Jarryd Griffen put on 37 but wickets fell in regular intervals to have the Knights all out for 144, with McIntosh top scoring with 47.

R Dickson was the pick of the Hillman bowlers with 3/23.

Hillman found themselves in similar trouble early 2/19 with good bowling from Neven Macukat 2/16 off his 10 overs.

Lachlan McDonald and Chris Littlewood steadied the innings taking the score to 3/82 at drinks.

Littlewood (9) fell first over after drinks but McDonald took control and led the Hillman boys to their first win of the season finishing all out 187.

Brad Raath claimed 3/22 with McDonald top scoring with 66.

Shoalwater won the toss and chose to bowl first against Pinjarra at Stan Twight.

Steve Edmonds bowled superbly with a strong breeze blowing across the pitch, bowling his 10 overs straight and taking one for 14 with the scalp of former Shoalwater player Jamie Lee.

Scoring was slow early but then Pinjarra opened up towards the end of the innings to go from 1/52 after 20 overs to be five down after 50 overs for 208.

All batters for Pinjarra chipped in with a score with R Pack falling just short of a half century to be 49 not out.

M Ford and P Miller made 43 and 42 respectively.

Edmonds took the bowling honours for Shoalwater with Brad Ranford bowling well at the end.

Shoalwater got off to a shaky start losing a wicket on the second ball.

They then steadied to be in with a chance at four for 85 however some great bowling after drinks from Jamie Lee saw Shoalwater crumble to be all out for 116 after just 39 overs.

Leee took four for eight off eight overs to seal the game for Pinjarra.

C Zadow bowled well to take three for 32 off 10 overs.

Paul Speechly was the pick of the batters to end up with 44.
