A MAXIMUM 240 entered the 2009 Bright Eyes Sunglasses State Interclub Championship held at Doddis beach last Sunday.
The Interclub Championships were initiated by Mandurah triathlete Clive Choate with the idea of promoting club spirit and friendly rivalry, as well as recognising Rob Pickard, the Triathlon WA president who, for almost a decade, had contributed so much to the sport.
Two trophies are defended in the State Interclub Championship; the Rob Pickard Trophy and the President’s Trophy.
The Rob Pickard Trophy is awarded to the team with the highest points tally at the end of the race.
Each participant scores points for their club.
This year the trophy was retained by Stadium Triathlon Club.
Stadium entered 65 members into the event to secure the win just ahead of North Coast who entered 54 members.
The club scored a total of 5681 points ahead of North Coast on 4714, UWA (3781), Fremantle (1739), Mandurah placed fifth with 1510, Bunbury (1384), Rockingham (975), City (294) and Kalgoorlie (114).
The Presidents Cup, is awarded to the club with the greatest point average, was won by Fremantle Triathlon Club who had a score of 102.29.
Fremantle had some great performances by their female and male members to edge them in front of UWA.
Mandurah had a point average of 75.50.
The triathlon included a 750m swim, 17.5km cycle and 4.6km run.
Mandurah Triathlon Club member David Whitely said a few participants felt the heat but nothing drastic happened.
UWA’s Felicity Sheedy-Ryan was first to cross the finish line in a time of 57.04.
The first male to finish was fellow UWA triathlete Nick Murray.
Carina Costello was the first Mandurah female to finish - she placed 25th in a time of 1.09.58 while Jamie Muir was the first Mandurah male across the line.
He placed 30th in a time of 1.03.35.
The Interclub event is the only race where competitors do not race as an individual but race to accumulate points for their club.
More than 100 new people competed in the interclub this year and a greater percentage of females competing than ever before.
