Mandurah hopes to produce magic

10 Mar, 2010 04:23 PM
THE Mandurah Magic will kick off their 2010 State Basketball League season this weekend.

Since finishing at the bottom of the ladder last season the Magic men’s side has added two US imports to its list.

Max Hunter, a 6’5 power forward was the first of the Americans to join the list.

Hailing from Kentucky, the 25-year-old is a versatile player who loves to post up and do the dirty work inside the key.

Casey Crevelone is a 6’4 shooting guard who spent the last four seasons playing college ball for Western New Mexico.

With the addition of two experienced imports to a side of young local talent who have played together for the past two seasons, Magic coach Jason Chalk said play-offs this year was not out of the question.

“We’re a fitter side and started pre-season training in October while most others didn’t start until December,” he said.

“We’ve now got the right balance in the team and could beat anyone… nothing scares me.”

The Mandurah Magic women have a monkey on their back.

This State Basketball League season they are determined to get it off their backs.

The Magic women have played in four grand final series in the past, the latest being 2009, but have yet to win a premiership.

Coach Brooke Burns said it was too early to make any bold statements but added she was a big believer that hard work paid off.

And the women have been working hard over the summer.

“(To win the grand final) is always a goal and we’ve got a great team again but the league is even tougher and more even this year and on any given night any team could win,” Burns said.

“So if we can mesh well from the start then a grand final is possible… we’re capable.”

The Magic has lost Gemma Thomas, who is pregnant, from last year’s side but have added Kate Cronan to its roster.

“We’ve also added some new kids which is exciting to add to our general core group,” Burns said.

The coach added she was happy with the side’s pre-season and was looking forward to another SBL season.

“We’ve had good preparation and changed our focus a little this year with less running and more short and sharp work which I think has paid off.”

Gemma Thomas is a bigger loss than they could ever imagine. Probably their best defensive player,

Boston will seriously need to step up in defence to cover this loss.

Good luck Magic girls!

Consistently one of the best teams in the league, with undeniably the best coach in the league.
