TWELVE-year-old Zayne O’Meara is a champion in the making after putting in a fantastic effort to win the under 12 female 4km run category in the City to Surf last Sunday.
Zayne finished in 16 minutes 52 seconds which also placed her in 11th place overall in the 4km woman’s division.
She has been taking part in Little Athletics for two years and said she found she enjoyed the distance running the most.
As well as placing first for her age group in the City to Surf, Zayne recently won the 2.5km Peel Districts Cross Country against runners from several schools.
She also ran at the All Schools Western Australia Cross Country competition against the best in WA and placed sixth.
Zayne trains two times a week with coach Shane Ellis from Flying Stars and once a month at Challenge Stadium.
Zayne’s mother Nyree said she was extremely proud of her daughter and her achievements since starting.
“She’s only new to it and has done so well in her two years,” she said.
“She keeps improving all the time.”
Nyree said Zayne’s grandfather had promised to buy Zayne a Porsche if she won a gold medal at the Olympics.
Zayne said she wants to continue running and hoped one day to make it to the Olympics.
