Students spruce up trees for festival

29 Apr, 2009 02:48 PM
Mandurah Primary School students are taking pride in their community and decorating some of the oldest trees in Mandurah in time for the Stretch Festival.

The students learnt the art of origami from origami specialist Sanny Ang.

Year 4 teacher Sharon Gill said it was a great way to get the students involved in the community and building respect for their school.

“Naturally, they’re enthralled just to have a visitor,” she said.

It showed as Mr Ang led the year 4 classes through making various origami

including a fish, a frog and a crane.

The project was designed to acknowledge the rows of peppermint trees along Gibson Street which have been in place since the 1950s.

The trees were originally planted by the County Women’s Association – some of whom attended Mandurah Primary School.

The Stretch Festival, a showcase of arts, culture and activities, runs from

May 1 to May 3.
