Strong winds batter the coast

29 Jun, 2009 12:06 PM
A STRONG cold front from the west delivered 19.8mm of rain to Mandurah from last Thursday until 9am today.

The heavy rain and strong winds helped boost the June rainfall to 120.4mm so far which is still short of the monthly average of 186.2mm.

“Mandurah has been lashed by furious winds over the weekend,” Bureau of Meteorology climate information officer John Relf said.

“Wind gusts more than 91km/h are considered severe.”

On Saturday night winds reached 91km/h and this morning winds peaked at 98km/h.

“The ferocious part of the severe weather is over but bad weather is still on its way with thunderstorms expected tonight.”

The Mandurah Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) attended 10 callouts over the Mandurah area over the weekend.

“Mandurah was very lucky and wasn’t hit quite as bad by the storm as what we thought,” FESA volunteer Chris Stickland said.
