WHILE Pinjarra residents will soon have an aquatic centre and hydrotherapy pool, it could be at the expense of another of the town’s recreational facilities.
Last Thursday the Murray Shire Council voted to remove the skate park which is near the new aquatic centre, amid concerns it would be the cause of damage to the new centre.
In a report to councillors chief executive Dean Unsworth said the $7million aquatic centre was “the most significant investment the council had made” and there was “significant concern at the locality clash” between the aquatic centre and the skate park.
He said the aquatic building would be only three metres from the park and as the building was to have a glass outlook onto the park, there was “potential for serious and ongoing damage to council’s investment”.
Graffiti damage, vandalism and theft from the centre’s construction site have been reported over recent months.
Mr Unsworth’s report said the current location of the skate park was not accessible and it had significant graffiti issues.
A committee is to be formed to identify alternative skate park sites and funding opportunities.
Following public consultation a new location is expected to be identified and approved by November.
