More bad weather on the way

29 Jun, 2009 05:29 PM
BAD weather is expected to hit the coast between 8pm and 10pm tonight, bringing dangerous weather that could damage homes and make travel unsafe.

More than 110 FESA State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers are still active and will continue to work through the night to assist the community after widespread storms sweep across the state.

At last count the SES had received more than 180 calls for help in the metropolitan area since 7am this morning, 49 of these from the City of Stirling and 270 properties have been impacted since Friday night.

A further 46 calls have come from the South West, Great Southern and Goldfields, with 25 calls since 1.30am this morning.

More than 240 properties have been hit by bad storms that have swept across the Perth metropolitan area and south west since Friday night.

Damage has been reported in coastal suburbs from Two Rocks to Rockingham, with the City of Stirling the worst hit with 35 calls for help.

All SES units in the metropolitan area have been activated and SES volunteers from as far away as Northam have been called to backup Stirling SES.

The majority of calls have involved making temporary repairs to homes, fixing minor roof damage, removing fallen trees from homes, cars, fences and power lines. SES volunteers have also assisted with some major structural damage.

There have been reports of fallen trees and minor damage to homes in Bunbury, Busselton and Capel.

SES volunteers have been supported by career Fire and Rescue Service and Bush Fire Service firefighters.

FESA have also worked closely with WA Police, Western Power, Main Roads and local government to minimise the impact on the community.

The number of calls for SES assistance is likely to increase as people return home.

If driving, take extra care on the roads:

• If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
