TWO recently-completed Department of Housing developments at Meadow Springs and Lakelands have provided 151 more affordable housing options in the Peel region.
Housing Minister Troy Buswell said the new developments were delivered as part of the $497million Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan.
“Completed in June the developments consist of one, two and three-bedroom homes providing 151 new homes for seniors, singles and families,” Mr Buswell said.
“The WA government has worked hard to manage a range of construction programs under the stimulus program, and the new developments are part of 287 new affordable housing options for the Peel region.
“These developments play an important part in increasing social housing and the availability of affordable rental options for low to moderate income households.”
Tenancy management will be undertaken by community housing organisation Stella Living Limited.
Mr Buswell said the new developments were a great example of how government could leverage partnerships with private developers and non-government organisations to create more affordable housing options.
“For this project we have partnered with Mirvac as the main contractor and were able to combine the resources of government with the expertise and experience of the private sector to achieve an excellent outcome.
“Such partnerships are essential to the success of the state’s new Affordable Housing Strategy, and our goal is to deliver at least 20,000 affordable homes by 2020 through innovative projects like these.”
The new developments are turnkey projects that have been built to high universal design standards and have an energy rating of six stars and above.
The development in Lakelands feature 40 one-bedroom, 39 two-bedroom and seven three-bedroom dwellings, and the Meadow Springs development has 18 one-bedroom, 37 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom dwellings.
Federal Brand MP Gary Gray said it was exciting when state and federal governments works with private developers and non-government organisations to complete construction programs.
“A further 136 new affordable homes are also being built at Coodanup, Greenfields and Mandurah,” he said.
“Also this week residents have begun moving in to 96 new homes for the aged in Mandurah.
“The $19 million initiative is a joint project between the Australian and WA governments and the Bethanie Group, which manages the new units.”
The 96 units in MacLaggan Turn, Coodanup, adjoin an existing Bethany aged care facility.
The new complex features two two-storey buildings, each containing 48 units.
The buildings are joined by community open space.
“The $5.6 billion Social Housing Initiative was the single largest investment in social housing ever undertaken by an Australian Government,” Mr Gray said.
“The Social Housing Initiative, delivered under the government’s stimulus package, is designed to assist low income Australians who are homeless or struggling in the private rental market,” Mr Gray said.
Under the project around 19,600 homes are being constructed across the nation and will be completed by June 2012. About 14,400 of these have already been completed.
