PEEL detectives have confirmed that a body found under the Mandurah Traffic Bridge on Thursday night was that of Mandurah resident Kevin Ibbs.
Police said they received a call about 11pm Thursday night from Mr Ibbs.
By the time police found Mr Ibbs he was dead.
There were no suspicious circumstances.
He gained notoriety in the 1980s and was dubbed the ‘30-second rapist’ after a woman he had been having sex with withdrew her consent.
Mr Ibbs was charged with sexual assault and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment after the judge found he had continued sexual intercourse for about 30 seconds without consent.
Years later the woman, Christine Elizabeth Watson, admitted to police she and Mr Ibbs’ ex-wife, Katrina Ann Carter, had set him up to get him out of the house they had all been living in.
Both women were convicted of conspiring to pervert the course of justice and each spent seven months in jail.
Mr Ibbs was acquitted in 2001 and the case became widely regarded as a travesty of justice.
Mr Ibbs’ career had been ruined, his health had been affected and the case had cost him more than one million dollars.
He recently appeared in the Mandurah Magistrates Court and was on bail for firearms-related offences at the time of his death.
He was 56 years old.
His family has been notified.
