Man found dead under bridge

PEEL detectives have confirmed that a body found under the Mandurah Traffic Bridge on Thursday night was that of Mandurah resident Kevin Ibbs.

Police said they received a call about 11pm Thursday night from Mr Ibbs.

By the time police found Mr Ibbs he was dead.

There were no suspicious circumstances.

He gained notoriety in the 1980s and was dubbed the ‘30-second rapist’ after a woman he had been having sex with withdrew her consent.

Mr Ibbs was charged with sexual assault and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment after the judge found he had continued sexual intercourse for about 30 seconds without consent.

Years later the woman, Christine Elizabeth Watson, admitted to police she and Mr Ibbs’ ex-wife, Katrina Ann Carter, had set him up to get him out of the house they had all been living in.

Both women were convicted of conspiring to pervert the course of justice and each spent seven months in jail.

Mr Ibbs was acquitted in 2001 and the case became widely regarded as a travesty of justice.

Mr Ibbs’ career had been ruined, his health had been affected and the case had cost him more than one million dollars.

He recently appeared in the Mandurah Magistrates Court and was on bail for firearms-related offences at the time of his death.

He was 56 years old.

His family has been notified.

The death of Kevin Ibbs is an indictment on all West Australians. We, through our police force that represents us, arrested and charged Kevin for a crime he did not commit. Our representatives in the department of Public Prosecutions failed to properly investigate the case.

Our representatives in the courts failed to protect his right as an innocent person.

Our representatives in the jury rooms failed to acquit him.

Our representatives in Government failed to compensate him for the massive cost of righting the wrong that had been done. West Australians can't live in denial and pass the blame to others.

We are all responsible for the injustice that finally claimed the life of an innocent man. Kevin battled for years against an insensitive society and those of us that have been through the same mill realise that the stress, which is a result of injustice, can kill.

How many more innocent lives are we prepared to sacrifice before we take personal responsibility for those that are accused, charged and convicted of crimes they did not commit? John Button (chairman Innocence Project WA) 156 Ponte Vecchio Blvd Ellenbrook 92967745 0410302878

Very tragedic story.Failure of us regarding justice. We should be careful in future. But to my belief Kevin also was impatient.Could have filed defamation against the judgement.Sometimes mistakes happened. Finally I feel sad for kevin.God bless him.
