Look to the skies

04 Feb, 2010 02:54 PM
A SPECTACULAR halo around the sun currently being seen over Mandurah skies is not as rare as people may think.

Perth Observatory astronomer Ralph Martin said the event occurred “a couple of times a year”.

Known as a 22-degree halo, the phenomenon occurs when cirrus clouds, which are made up of ice crystals, scatter light away from the sun.

“It also happens with the moon,” Mr Martin said.

“As long as people are careful not to stare directly at the sun, it is pretty safe to observe it.”
