A BUSHFIRE in Boddington a couple of weeks ago destroyed more than 530 hectares of State Forest and private bushland.
The fire, which is still under investigation, was 14km west of Boddington on Boddington Gold Mine property.
The blaze broke out on January 18 and was contained the following day.
Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) incident controller Jamie Ridley, said the fire was burning in an area that had not been burnt for 25 years.
“DEC crews held it in the north-west region when it ran into an area that was burnt five years ago,” Mr Ridley said.
“The fire had been fully tracked and was being held within containment lines.”
Fifty fire fighters, Boddington Gold Mine staff and bushfire brigades from the Shire of Boddington were involved in the effort to contain the fire.
Seven heavy earth-moving machines supported by 10 DEC fire trucks were involved in the mop up and crews were supported by three water bombers during the fire.
Mine safety advisor Jason Bartlett said although the fire caused a lot of damage they were lucky as only a few pipes at the mine site were damaged.
The Bibbulmun Track was closed for two days as a precaution to the north-west of the fire between Mt Wells and Chadoora campsites.
