A MANDURAH man is one of five finalists in the WA Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander of the Year awards that will be announced at the WA Training Awards dinner at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre on August 27.
Eugene Winmar of Coodanup is an active member of the Peel community and is involved in a raft of projects that encourage more Aboriginal people to train.
After recently starting studying events management Mr Winmar hopes to run his own Aboriginal heritage tours in the Peel region.
“I would like to help increase Aboriginal participation in higher education and improve outcomes for Aboriginal people,” Mr Winmar said.
Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier said the awards showcased the talent across Western Australia’s training sector.
“A highly skilled workforce is essential for our economic and social prosperity,” Mr Collier said.
“These awards recognise our vibrant training sector which produces outstanding, skilled people who can take their place among the best in Australia.
“I congratulate the finalists across all award categories.”
Some will have the opportunity to compete against the best in Australia at the Australian Training Awards in Canberra on November 19.
