SCHOOLS around the Peel region commenced the 2009 school year on Monday.
The new school year has seen an increase of enrolments in certain schools around the region.
North Dandalup Primary School is facing its biggest year in terms of student enrolments with 114 students currently enrolled.
South Halls Head Primary School opened its doors in the middle of last year with 200 enrolments and now has 380 students enrolled for 2009.
Ocean Road Primary School is also facing its biggest enrolment since the Dawesville Catholic Primary School opened nearby.
They have started the year with 560 enrolments.
Halls Head Primary School has seen a decline in the number of students, starting the year with 150 students less than they had in 2008.
Over the holiday period most schools have had a chance to implement new programs and upgrade equipment.
With the federal government introducing the Education Revolution project, all schools will be eligible to receive up to $200,000 to complete upgrades.
- Halls Head Primary School has had a reduction of 150 students since the opening of the new South Halls Head Primary School.
Principal Clarke said the students had more opportunity to utilise the facilities now.
The enclosure of the undercover area is finished and will now be used as a multi-function centre.
-Halls Head Community College will run their first full year of their new literacy program.
A school renewal program is also being put in place.
They will also be sending their first teams ever to country week in preparation for the addition of senior year students.
- Dudley Park Primary School will be running a full-time literacy and numeracy specialist to work with the teachers.
They have also had $180,000 spent on the school and grounds since the commencement of the school year in 2008.
- Assumption Catholic Primary School will have a Focus on Mathematics program in place which will assess all children in years 1 and 2.
It will help design programs for them.
There will also be an early literacy program as well as a full-time special needs coordinator.
- Coodanup Community College was awarded a grant under the education digital revolution program which will see the addition of 60 new computers to the school.
The music and football specialist programs will also come into play this year.
- South Halls Head Primary School has had enrolments grow from 200 to 380 in the new year.
There will be a big emphasis on values this year.
- Mandurah Primary School will host the Peel Behaviour Centre when it moves onto the school site.
They will continue with the sports enrichment program.
There are plans in place to have 30 extra solar panels installed.
- North Dandalup Primary School has installed a ‘bush tucker’ garden with artistic totem poles featured throughout. They also have a new undercover assembly area and a new classroom on site.
- Ocean Road Primary School has put in place a ‘getting it right’ literacy teacher.
They will run a ‘talented and gifted’ program across the school to identify and encouraged students and place them in appropriate programs.
There will be seven level 3 teachers to provide educational leadership across the school.
There is also a new junior primary playground.
- Mandurah Catholic College has a new year 12 block which includes a common area, offices, classrooms, kitchen facilities and outdoor areas.
There will also be a new lecture theatre ready for use in May.
A government grant will see the school install solar panels for energy conservation and student educational purposes.
