Cultural excursion

14 Nov, 2007 02:39 PM
INDIGENOUS students of Falcon Primary School explored their roots with a cultural heritage excursion on Tuesday.

Led by Iris Woods and Mark Bonshore from the Fremantle Peel District Education Office, the students and their parents toured several sites of significance in the Peel region, including the Pinjarra Massacre Memorial and the natural spring wetlands in Secret Harbour.

The students were taught about the uses of plants, including their medical properties, the Noongar language and then were treated to a guest speech from George Walley who talked about the history of Pinjarra.

The parents thought the day was a great success and found it very enjoyable to learn about the Noongar culture.

The day was organised by the Falcon Primary School Indigenous Education Committee.

Year two teacher, Judy Stribley, who accompanied the group commented on how much she had learnt that day.

“I gained a deeper understanding of the cultural history of the local area,” Miss Stribley said.

“I will now be able to apply this knowledge within my classroom.”
