Housework duties need motivation

SOME women appeared on a television program on Sunday night declaring their love for housework and being a housewife.

While females, and some males, have long been fighting for equal rights and opportunities for women for many years, the simple fact is that some women out there are quite happy and content with staying at home and attending to household duties.

And why wouldn’t they be?

It is every woman’s choice to decide how she wants to spend her days.

It could be a high-powered office job, spending the day at home with the children or combining the two in a very precise juggling act.

The role of women and men has changed so much over time.

Some men now stay at home with the babies and women chose to go back to work and become successful at what they do.

Maybe now we are seeing a shift towards the values and lifestyle choices of the ‘good old days’ where women stayed at home and the men went off to ‘bring in the bacon’.

It didn’t bother me that these women on television had no interest in pursuing a career and wanted to devote themselves to a life of being a happy housewife, but when I heard that they “loved” doing housework, that’s when some alarm bells went off in my head.

Who loves doing housework?

Scrubbing toilets, mopping floors and cleaning oily ovens doesn’t sound like the ideal life to me, but yes there are some people out there who do genuinely like it.

The very thought of cleaning out my fridge and brushing away cobwebs from the eaves sends me into a depressing downward spiral and I put off these chores for as long as I can.

My normal house cleaning ritual includes peeling my lazy self off the coach and away from the cartoons on Saturday morning and putting on Michael Jackson or Beyonce to get me in the cleaning mood.

I always find upbeat music is good to vacuum and sweep floors to and I have been known to play fake guitar with a broom handle and use the feather duster as a microphone.

Sometimes I wish I was one of those women who loved cleaning and chores, but in the meantime I’ve got the Thriller album to get me through the day.
